CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

HARPER

Not long now.

Harper didn’t feel like doing much of anything. Not with Jodie being too busy with work to speak to her, but promising she would as soon as the six weeks had come to an end. Harper could count it in hours at this stage rather than minutes. She’d received a longer message than the stated three words explaining she wanted to stick it out because of how busy she was, but was looking forward to a quality catch-up soon.

Something about it didn’t seem right. The period of absence had primarily been Harper’s idea, to allow her time to adjust to her new circumstances. But now she was in a good place, and desperate to see her sister, she’d thought that reuniting would soon follow. But Jodie had deferred it for the full six weeks and Harper was finding these last days hard to accept.

‘Are you ready, ma’am?’ Maceo asked from the open doorway.

‘I think I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. It’s hard to tell when you won’t let me know where we’re going.’ Harper should have been delighted by another trip outside the hospital. After all, it could be beyond monotonous as an inpatient for any length of time. Anything to break up the routine should be welcome, but at the same time she’d grown to value that routine. Knowing what was going to happen and when brought certain comforts.

‘Somewhere special. You should know that it’s always somewhere special.’ There was an expression on Maceo’s face that was hard to make out, as if every single emotion had arrived at once and none of them were winning.

It made Harper stretch to a grin. She didn’t mean to be grumpy with Maceo. It wasn’t his fault that her sister hadn’t re-established normal communications with her. And it wasn’t forever. She only had to get through a few more days.

‘Do I get any clues?’ she asked, once they were in the limousine again (courtesy of Maceo’s organising skills), their chairs carefully stowed away.

She thought about the various trips they’d had over the weeks she’d been here and how much she was going to miss him. This whole period of rehabilitation would have been much harder without his support and, really, she should be the one saying thank you to him.

‘Clues would be too easy. I think you should guess.’

Harper groaned. She never liked guessing in case she said something wildly wrong or inappropriate. ‘Don’t make me guess. In fact, you can’t, so it’ll remain a mystery until we arrive.’

True to her word, rather than spouting a list of random activities, she enjoyed the views instead. Not that there were many to enjoy at first when the only buildings were industrial and there were no landscapes to spot. The further time when on, the better the view got.

‘Fishing?’ she said randomly, her curiosity getting the better of her.

‘What do you take me for? This is supposed to be a celebration!’

It was a funny thing for him to say when his expression was one of commiseration.
